Jedną z najważniejszych prac prof. Goddeerisa, która zasługuje w pełni na udostępnienie polskiemu Czytelnikowi jest La Grande Emigration polonaise en Belgique (1831-1870): élites et masses en exil à l’époque romantique. Ta książka poświęcona belgijskiemu odłamowi Wielkiej Emigracji polskiej, jest pierwszym naukowym i całościowym opracowaniem w języku francuskim dziejów tego ważnego skupiska powstańczych uchodźców. Zastosowanie oryginalnej metody badawczej pozwoliło Autorowi na formułowanie tez i wniosków weryfikujących w wielu przypadkach sądy pokutujące w polskiej historiografii. Goddeeris bowiem nie ograniczył się do przypomnienia wielkich postaci tej emigracji jak Joachim Lelewel czy generałowie polscy uczestniczący w tworzeniu armii młodego państwa, ale starał się ukazać przede wszystkim rolę anonimowych w większości uchodźców integrujących się stopniowo z nową ojczyzną i nadających swemu patriotyzmowi, wyolbrzymianemu często w pracach historycznych, charakteru coraz bardziej sentymentalnego. Dla orientacji w jej ocenie i dla zachęty do podjęcia się jej tłumaczenia zamieszczam poniżej fragmenty recenzji wybitnego znawcy tej problematyki R. Żurawskiego vel Grajewskiego (j.ł)

(…) Na koniec wstępu Autor deklaruje, że w swych badaniach kierował się metodą prozopograficzną — polegającą na zbiorczej analizie danych dotyczących przedstawicieli określonej grupy. W tym wypadku zostało nimi objętych 1019 emigrantów polskich różnej proweniencji, wśród których Goddeeris wyróżnił pięć podgrup: 1) bliżej niezidentyfikowani, 2) uczestnicy wojny domowej w Portugalii, 3) przybyli do Belgii po rewolucjach 1846–1848, 4) przybyli do Belgii po powstaniu 1863–1864 r., 5) przybyli przed 1846 r. Trzeba przyznać, że jest to cenna, choć nieczęsto stosowana metoda badań. Wstrzemięźliwość w odwoływaniu się do niej większości historyków wynika zapewne z konieczności prowadzenia bardzo żmudnych i drobiazgowych kwerend archiwalnych dotyczących osobistych losów poszczególnych osób należących do danej grupy.

(…) W sumie otrzymaliśmy interesujące dzieło, które dotyczy w istocie nie w pełni dotąd rozpoznanej tematyki z dziejów Wielkiej Emigracji. Jakkolwiek część formułowanych przez Autora sądów i opinii skłania do polemik, dotyczą one przede wszystkim kwestii interpretacji i być może mają swe źródło w różnym poziomie stopnia przemyślenia badanej materii przez historyków polskich i obcych. Dyskusja o zasadności, efektywności czy motywacji działań podejmowanych przez Polaków w okresie zaborów — w gruncie rzeczy odnosząca się do samego sensu takich czy innych zachowań — toczy się w Polsce od XIX w. i dotyka sedna świadomości narodowej. Stąd odpowiedzi formułowane w polskiej historiografi i są bardziej zniuansowane i nie takie łatwe, jak w przypadku zastosowania prostego kryterium uzyskanego sukcesu, czy też poniesionej klęski, jako miernika ich oceny. Być może to spojrzenie z zewnątrz na bilans dokonań polskiej Wielkiej Emigracji w jej belgijskim fragmencie ma walor otrzeźwiający i nawet jeśli polskiemu czytelnikowi trudno w pełni je podzielić, z pewnością nie może go zlekceważyć. Książka Idesbalda Goddeerisa wejdzie zatem na stałe do kanonu obowiązkowych lektur dotyczących problematyki Wielkiej Emigracji.

Choć nie jest pełną monografią tematu i nie zawiera wciąż, w moim przekonaniu potrzebnego, tradycyjnego, regularnego wykładu w nieco postponowanym przez Autora stylu „l’ancienne historiographie politique et diplomatique”, to przynosi potężny zasób nowych informacji, skłania do weryfi kacji części dotąd funkcjonujących poglądów i do ponownych refl eksji nad tym, czy te, przy których chcielibyśmy pozostać, są na pewno prawdziwe. A skoro tak, to spełnia wszystkie kryteria dobrej książki historycznej. To skłania mnie do sformułowania przekonania o konieczności pilnego przetłumaczenia jej na język polski i opublikowania w celu stworzenia możliwości szerszego wprowadzenia jej do polskiego obiegu naukowego i udostępnienia tym potencjalnym czytelnikom, dla których znajomość języka francuskiego jest istotną barierą uniemożliwiającą zaznajomienie się z jej treścią.

Hoe ben je het spionagedossier van Roger Motz eigenlijk op het spoor gekomen? 

(…) Toen ik in 2001 mijn proefschrift verdedigde over Poolse migratie in België, had het Poolse IPN (Instituut voor Nationale Herinneringen), dat onder meer het archief van de Poolse veiligheidsdiensten toegankelijk maakt voor historisch onderzoek, net zijn deuren geopend. Het lag voor de hand dat ik daar eens ging kijken. In een dossier over een contraspionage-netwerk van Poolse migranten eind jaren veertig kwam ik de naam van Roger Motz tegen. Dat heeft mij ertoe geleid om hem in de inventaris op te zoeken, en zo ben ik op zijn dossier gestoten.

In 2006 kreeg ik geen toelating om het in te kijken, wat mijn nieuwsgierigheid natuurlijk prikkelde. Uiteindelijk heb ik het wel in handen gekregen in januari 2013, toen ik nog een reeks archieven doornam voor mijn boek Spioneren voor het communisme. Het dossier was flinterdun, maar wel erg ontluisterend. Niet alleen omdat hij partijvoorzitter en minister was geweest, maar ook omdat hij daadwerkelijk informatie doorgaf. Er zijn nog andere politici en journalisten met een dossier, maar die bevatten alleen plannen over hoe de Polen hen benaderden en probeerden te ‘rekruteren’, alsook verslagen over hoe die projecten mislukten. In het kader van een project met mijn Krakause collega Józef Łaptos heb ik de voorbije jaren bijkomend onderzoek gedaan rond Motz. Ik heb nieuwe bronnen doorgenomen: niet alleen het (veel dikkere) dossier van Jan Hauptman (zijn contactpersoon met de Poolse inlichtingendiensten) en enkele dossiers van de zaken waarover Motz informatie doorgaf (bv. de Bilderbergconferenties), maar ook de archieven van de ministeries van Buitenlandse Zaken en van Buitenlandse Handel van de Poolse Volksrepubliek. De resultaten daarvan worden binnenkort gepubliceerd in een bundel geredigeerd door Przemysław Szczur.
